![]() For whatever reason, I see people unsure about God and where they stand with him. Maybe it’s because they were hurt by a church in the past … or because they’re skeptical any church really has the truth. More and more I see people trying to go-it-alone spiritually. But more than any of those things, I’d like to talk to you about being a pastor. When I’m not busy as a pastor or with my family, you might find me attempting to do something with my tools, reading a book, or playing piano. I find I can get interested in just about anything. We thank God for four school-aged boys who keep our home lively. We've found Lake Mills to be a wonderful place to raise a family. I graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in 2010 and served as a pastor for seven years in Maumee, OH before joining the pastoral staff here at St Paul in summer 2017. My wife Jessie is an RN at Watertown Regional Medical Center. ![]() Pastor Timothy was born not too far from here in Watertown, but from then on grew up mostly in southern Minnesota. ![]() ![]() ![]() Gazing at gorgeous portraits of centuries past, we don’t see what lies beneath the royal robes and the stench of unwashed bodies the lice feasting on private parts and worms nesting in the intestines. The most gorgeous palaces were little better than filthy latrines. Physicians prescribed mercury enemas, arsenic skin cream, drinks of lead filings, and potions of human fat and skull, fresh from the executioner. Women wore makeup made with mercury and lead. Ironically, royals terrified of poison were unknowingly poisoning themselves daily with their cosmetics, medications, and filthy living conditions. Servants licked the royal family’s spoons, tried on their underpants and tested their chamber pots. To avoid poison, they depended on tasters, unicorn horns, and antidotes tested on condemned prisoners. For centuries, royal families have feared the gut-roiling, vomit-inducing agony of a little something added to their food or wine by an enemy. The story of poison is the story of power. ![]() ![]() Or try this link to use Google to search the subreddit. This wide variety of faces reflects a history of intermingling between tribes and also with people of European, African, and Asian descent. Just like the characters I this book, Native people may have blonde hair or black skin, tight cornrows or a loose braid. ![]() But there is an enormous range of hair textures and skin colors. Most people think Native Americans always have brown skin and black hair. The final pages of Fry Bread can help you interrupt that kind of harmful statement. That's such a damaging statement! When you hear an adult say that to anybody-but especially a child-stop them. That expectation means that adults don't hesitate to tell a Native child like the girl holding the cat that they are "not really an Indian" (or some variant of that phrase). ![]() Fry Bread pushes back on the expectation that Native people look the same (black hair, dark skin, high cheekbones etc.). After the lecture, a family approached me to say how deeply moved they are by seeing a child with lighter skin and hair. ![]() ![]() ![]() Half-bloods, like our main character, are the result of a Hematoi and mortal union. In this world, Hematoi are descendents of half-gods and considered pure-bloods. ![]() Half-Blood by Jennifer L Armentrout is an urban mythology set in North Carolina (I believe, don’t hate me if I’m wrong). ![]() And y’all I could kick myself for how long I waited to read it. ![]() This is one of those books that has been on my TBR forever! Thanks to #coyer book club, I finally got around to reading it last month. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem-staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1: Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. ![]() ![]() ![]() Learn about the major environmental problems facing our planet and what can be done about them! Thirdly, I had not realised how densely populated is Taiwan. Again, this shows my lack of knowledge of the history of this region. Secondly, I had not known that the French bombarded Taiwan during the war between France and China from 1884 to 1885. That’s a long period of fifty years, but the fact that I knew nothing of this merely shows my previous ignorance of Taiwanese history. Firstly, I had not realised that Taiwan had been a dependency of Japan from 1895 until 1945. Cixin plays around with a number of dense, speculative science and technology concepts which wonderfully underpin the dramatic action and very rarely obscure the action. These are the central themes that China’s foremost hard sci-fi writer Liu Cixin wraps up in an elegantly written, surprisingly humorous and ultimately humanistic sequel to The Three Body Problem. ![]() Only here, the universe isn’t uncaring, it’s quite pointedly predatory.
